In ‘Feels like Far’, Doug Tornquist’s debut solo recording (available on CDbaby.com), the Hollywood studio tuba player collaborates with over a dozen instrumentalists. Recorded over a period of three years, Tornquist finally got it finished, squeezing in time between his regular gigs, teaching, rehearsals and sessions. The CD features lesser-known but important chamber works written by composers Anne McGinty, Bruce Broughton and Morton Gould.

The characters Felix and Oscar in the original stage production of The Odd Couple did not play any instruments. But if they had, they might have had a combination like the one that Ron Kalina and Jim Self have put together here.

The Memphis Hang is a nice collection of tunes that (other than a couple of tuba overdubs in the studio) could be a live-off-the-floor recording from a smoky club somewhere on Beale Street (nevermind laws about smoking in bars these days....). Jim Shearer and Charlie Wood definitely bring the mood with them on this recording.

Every now and then, a new recording comes along that truly marks a step forward for our instrument. Tom McCaslin has done just that with his new CD Inside Out.
