Default Intermediate Tuba Range

Hey Guys, I'm new here and had a few questions for some people.

I'm currently a high school, Sophomore and started playing tuba in the 6th grade. I'm hoping to start private lessons soon as well. Currently my range is from a around a low F to a E in the middle of the Bass cleft staff. Is this a good range for as long as i have been playing? My tone stays good throughout of most of the range, only a little shaky on the high end. I'm playing a old beat-up Jupiter BB-flat tuba as well. Any input on if this is a good range would be awesome as well as exercises to improve tone and range.

Your range is what we call the "cash register," where most of the written repertoire of concert band music lay. If your range covers the repertoire you are playing, then that is sufficient for now.

After you get going with your instructor on private lessons, and start looking towards college repertoire, your instructor will have appropriate materials to help you improve all the way around, including tone, intonation, technical facility, lyrical facility, and yes, range. He may even recommend a different mouthpiece. Good luck with your private lessons.
