At least half of the actual works you propose to include are currently covered by a valid, enforceable copyright, and I would surmise that at least a substantial minority of the individual arrangements of works that are in the public domain that you are proposing to include are also copyrighted as well. As a lawyer who regularly deals with intellectual property issues, I can tell that at least three of the publishers whose works you propose to include actively defend their intellectual property, and aggressively pursue enforcement of their copyrights when they become aware of violations. In light of that, I would strongly urge you to cease and desist in your course of action immediately, until such time as you have obtained the necessary licenses to distribute individual arrangements on your list. |

Dear Disclaimer00,
As a publisher of a few of the above, I am not sure I get what you are trying to do here. It sounds like making copies of parts so others can decide whether to purchase in the future. If this is the case, I 100% agree with PGYM. If not, can you explain further? Wishing you well,

As a publisher and composer of some of the titles you list above, I concur with the above posts.
What you are proposing to do is illegal and be in no doubt, if you proceed, all of the publishers concerned will stop you - in court if necessary!! Your assertion that you hope not to deprive publishers of their income is naive. Many players buy music just to play it through, without ever hoping or expecting to perform it with piano. Please take some well-meant advice - DON'T DO IT! Philip Sparke Anglo Music Press |

OK, let's go the other way. As a tuba player, one of the types of volumes or collections that seem to be popular among tuba players is a volume of orchestral exerpts, whether used for practice, personal enjoyment, or even prep for professional auditions.
Now, since there are selections in the lists above that are protected by copyright, have you thought about contacting the various publishers, composers, or other owners of such copyrights of pieces not in the public domain, and work out a license agreement so you can publish your own edited collection of works, for which there might actually be a market if approached and executed properly, with proper licensing, publishing, and marketing? Someone like pgym, contacted privately, directly, and offline, might actually be able to help you with such a project, or refer you to other counsel that can. There is nothing wrong, per se, in the desire to publish a collection of works. What is wrong would be going about it without the proper steps in identifying those works of public domain, which would not need any permission, as opposed to identifying those works protected by copyright that need permission or license up front. I daresay that most owners of copyrights are eager to have their works properly published, so that the music can be disseminated and the appropriate royalties can be paid, ensuring the integrity of the whole process. If you're not sure whether a particular piece is under a copyright, the two agencies that oversee such in this country are BMI and ASCAP, and if you are a bona fide publisher willing to pay the appropriate royalties, will help you.
